"Zweihänder" Tank/DD Hybrid dungeon crawler

Welcome everyone to my 2hander Tank/DD hybrid build. I am having quite much success with this build in veteran dungeons including some older veteran DLC dungeons and veteran Dragonstar Arena. The way we tank with a two-hander involves shield stacking through Brawler, Blazing Shield, hardening weapon enchant and psijic shield. Though we still need to block the big hits from bosses to prevent the stun.

Keep in mind this is a selfish tank that doesn't give any buffs to your group but it does damage and healing! And the fact that we are tanking with a two-hander, we are providing that badass 2h tanking experience they probably have never seen before. ^^

Update: I have slightly updated the skills I use. Now the build has one more extra shield from the psijic guild passive called Concentrated Barrier, which gives 5k shield whenever we activate block. So, to activate this passive, I've simply slotted Precognition as my front bar (2h) ultimate and Empowering Sweeps to back bar. I already get minor protection from Blazing Shield, so Temporal Guard morph would be useless for me.  And then I am now using Heroic Slash instead of Deep Slash, for the ultimate generation. This allowed me to have much greater uptime on major protection buff through Empowering Sweep ult.

The build:

Race: Argonian is currently the best due to the passives, Nord and Imperial comes 2nd and 3rd but any stamina/health race is good. Even Altmer is decent. After the racial changes Nords probably will be the BiS though.

Attributes: All into stamina

Gear SetupNirnhoned 2h front bar, powered/defending/infused 1h sword and sturdy shield back bar.

6 heavy 1 medium, all sturdy.

  • 5x Hunding's Rage  / Seventh Legion Brute
  • 5x Plague Doctor
  • 1x Pirate, 1x Lord Warden (or 2x Blood Spawn)

Our monster sets give us the choice of either having permanent max resist (buffed) or 6% proc chance to max out our resists AND ultimate return.

Sevent Legion is also a great set. The uptime is quite high when you are taking the heat. It gives much more weapon damage and the heal is effected by the modifiers of our passives and CPs, so it makes us bit more tankier. However Hunding's Rage has a stamina set bonus and the 5th set bonus is always active.

2 weapon damage enchants and 1 magicka recovery enchant is I think the best. And if you can afford, you can have one infused trait for your mag recovery enchant but be careful not to drop bellow 30k health mark.

Dubious Camoran Drink

Warior mundus

Stats and champion points (and the full build with active buffs) can be seen in the link bellow. Keep in mind these are self buffed stats and due to power scaling in dungeons, our weapon damage goes up to 6k!

Skills:

  2 handed sword bar:

  • Brawler - Biting Jabs - Reverse Slice - Blazing Shield - Rally - Ult: Recognition

  S&B bar

  • Pierce Armor - Restoring Focus - Resolving Vigor - Repentance - Heroic Slash/Extended Ritual - Ult: Empowering Sweeps (or Spell Wall/Remembrance)

There are some flex spots. Most fights don't require cleanse. So Extended Ritual is in our bars only for the added HoT for our group and ourselves. You can use Heroic Slash instead of it.

You can then probably slot undaunted shield, i just find Brawler a lot more "fluid" when stacking shields. You can put it in place of Reverse Slice and have 3 shields going at all the time!

Rotation is quite simple. Blockcast the followings; Pierce Armor, Heroic Slash, Restoring Focus, Extended Ritual. Light attack once for weapon damage enchant, bar swap and pop a potion. Light attack(La)-Blazing Shield, La-Brawler, do a full heavy attack and quickly swap to back bar to cast Empowering Sweep then swap back to front bar, do Heavy attack(Ha)-Jabs, La-Jabs, rinse & repeat. We can do around 15k single target dps with this.

Reminders: Keep at least one shield up at all times. When surroundered by lots of mobs and out of magicka, dont panic. Do La-Brawler-Ha-Brawler-Ha-Brawler....until your magicka regens for Blazing Shield. Follow Up passive from 2h skill line also buffs our damage shield value from Brawler. So Brawler spam is usually enough to keep us safe when there are some mobs around. Save Blazing for boss heavy attacks. When you see mobs or boss charging heavy attacks on you, just quickly tap block and wait for the hit, it will activate the extra emergency 5k shield from the psijic guild passives.

That's all folks. I hope you all enjoy!

I'm using your build, and for the first time, playing a Stamplar actually *clicks* with me.  Before, I just could never get into the playstyle.  But thanks to this, I'm really enjoying playing my Stamplar and doing some Vet Dungeons.

I was curious, do you have a vMA build version of this?  or is there another build I can swap to when that time finally comes?

Hey man, I'm glad you are enjoying the build. Sadly i enjoy pvp more in this game and honestly vMA doesn't offer me anything gear-wise so, i'm just not doing it.

But i know doing vMA with stamplar is a big headache. I have not much success in there with this build because one needs more like a damage focused build in there. Maybe you should check out Alcast's stamplar builds and mix and match the gear in your preference.

You should go for it. Nords in the upcoming Elsweyr update are getting great buffs. Finally they are getting flat armor and resist buffs (5k'ish) in place of the current %8 less damage taken passive. This will synergise better with high armor/resist builds because the current 8% passive is multiplicative and not giving the full effect if you have above 25k armor/resist.

I think Nords will be the best in slot for this build. Because not only it will give us extra armor and resist, it will also allow us to use different monster sets for either group buffing or for some utility.

As you know since the Murkmire patch shields are effected by armor and resist, this made our shields even better than before! Plus we now have extra 400 stamina regen through restoring focus and blazing shield is giving 8% damage reduction(minor protection) through aedric spear passives. In the time i publish the build, it had none of these buffs. So it got much better.

Right now it is already as tanky as a dedicated tank and it will be even better in next update. I am so hyped for it. It could probably be well enough to do hardest veteran mode dlc dungeons when Elsweyr is released.

I like it! Good explanation, seems like a well balanced build.
