The Sanctified Fire - Magsorc PvE Nonpet Build (DrB)

Introduction

Welcome to my Sanctified Fire build for magicka sorcerer ! This build is a nonpet build, based on a light attack rotation. The advantages are :

  • Huge Single Target damage : this build is more bursty than my pet build. The reason is that, without the pet, we will have a much better time sustaining a light attack rotation.
  • No pet ! That means no need to resummon it 20 times. No need to switch to a different build if you can't use the pet in the fight ... <3
  • Provides high minor vulnerability and burning for your group.
  • Nice AoE damage, even though it will be lower than with a pet.

The drawbacks are :

  • Sustain may be tricky if you don't get enough synergies.
  • For maximal efficiency, requires a Perfected Inferno Asylum Staff which can be difficult to get.
  • As this is a light attack rotation, it isn't really ping friendly.

This build is specifically made for group content - trial or dungeons -, but it can be adapted for solo content as well like vMA. It was inspired by a video from @Andy.S. If you like it, check it out on my new website www.tabatta.eu ! :) This build will be organized as follow :

 1. Race

 2. Attributes

3. Food and Potions

4. Mundus

5. Gear

6. Champion Points

7. Passives

8. Skills

9. Stats

10. Rotation

11. Parses

1. Race

High elf provides a bonus to your shock and fire damage, as well as a bit of a boost to your sustain, so for me they are the best option, but I guess Dark Elf is really close. Another option would be Breton that gives a bit more sustain but less damage.

2. Attributes

64 points in magicka.

3. Food and Potions

We'll be using Clockwork Citrus Filet (Max Health  , Max Magicka  , Magicka recovery   or Health recovery  ) or Witchmother's Potent Brew if you can't afford the filet, and Spell Power potions (Lady's smock, Corn Flower, Water Hyacinth), to get major prophecy on both bars and major sorcery. Make sure to have three points in the alchemist passive "Medicinal use" to get 100% on those two buffs. Potion.

4. Mundus

The Apprentice is your best choice for this build, since you don't use a pet ! Use the Lover if you are solo playing or if you don't have an organized group.

5. Gear

According to my testings, the BiS gear is :

  • 5 Mechanical Acuity  pieces (craftable in the Clockwork City, 6 traits required).
  • 2  Ilambris  head and shoulders, in heavy and medium (drops in Crypt of Hearts I and undaunted chests).
  • 3 Willpower jewels (reward from random dungeons).
  • 1 Asylum Perfected Inferno Staff, with a fire enchantment (drops in veteran Asylum Sanctorium by defeating Saint Olms, Saint Felms and Saint Llothis in the same fight, or as a weekly reward).
  • 1 Maelstrom Inferno Staff, infused, with berserker enchantment (drops in veteran Maelstrom Arena). With Dragon Bones, you don't have to apply off-balance anymore and fire blockade provides more dps.

A few notes on the traits and enchantments :

  • Running the apprentice, full divines is better than using infused on the big pieces.
  • You want to run 5/1/1 (Light/Heavy/Medium) for the Undaunted Mettle passive.
  • With this build, you will have very little hp (15.3k with the Clockwork Citrus Filet). If you find that you need more hp, put two tristat enchants on big pieces (head, chest or legs), or if you can't afford tristat glyphs, one health glyph on a big piece (helm, chest or legs).
  • Infused main hand is a classic for this patch, the fire enchant is very strong because it procs burning but also fire Ilambris. Using the Asylum staff, you will apply lots of minor vulnerability already so you don't need to use a shock enchantment. You want to use a fire staff frontbar because with this build, the majority of your damage will be Single Target.
  • For the off hand, you want to run a fire staff for the 20% additional damage to burning targets. If no one in your team is using lightning blockade, you should still use a lightning staff on back bar. If you have trouble sustaining, I would also choose to run a lightning staff backbar because you will get more damage from your heavy attacks. I choose to run infused on it and a berserker enchant for several reasons : first off, we spend only <1s on the back bar (except during execute), so any other trait wouldn't be great, while the infused trait provides more spell damage on the front bar. Second, given that we go back bar only every ~8s, and that the cooldown of a non-infused berserker is 10s, we would lose a big uptime on this enchantment without infused as it would not be procced every rotation. In practice, in trial, with a bit of lag and mechanics to do, you wouldn't lose that much running with another trait.
  • Quick point : infused vs nirnhoned on backbar ? I saw a lot of people running nirnhoned on their backbar, but according to my calculations, when running a berserker enchant, infused is better. Indeed, if you were to spend all your time on back bar, infused would provide with more spell damage on average because of the lower cooldown of the berserker enchant. As soon as you don't spend all your time on your backbar, infused becomes more potent as it provides more spell damage on your front bar. The other points explained above are also valid of course.
  • If you still have trouble sustaining, you can use one magicka recovery glyph on a jewel.
  • Zaan ? Zaan provides strong single target damage, however, it forces you to play melee. Furthermore, the Spell Crit bonus of Zaan is not as good as the Max Magicka bonus of Ilambris, and Zaan provides only single target damage while Ilambris does AoE damage. For these reasons, I chose to keep Ilambris this patch. Feel free to use Zaan in fights that are only single target and on which you can play melee safely.

Alternative gear :

  • If you don't have a perfected Asylum Staff you can use either a Non Perfect one (the loss of dps is not that big, loots in normal Asylum Sanctorium) or use a Mechanical Acuity Fire staff front and use Moondancer Jewels  instead of Willpower Jewels +1 body piece instead of a Mechanical Acuity one. You can also use Infaillible Aether instead of Moondancer.
  • The Maelstrom staff makes your light attacks extremely potent. If you do not possess one, I strongly encourage you to try and complete the Maelstrom Arena : give it a few hours regularly, and you'll be able to finish :D ! As an alternative, you can use a second Acuity staff (infused, berserker enchant). Be aware that it will make you lose a significant amount of damage.

6. Champion Points

Keep in mind that green and red champion points should be adapted to what you are doing. For your blue champion points, the number of points in spell erosion will depend on your team and the uptime you have on penetration debuffs. The rest of my blue CPs have been determined using the awesome Constellations addon by Decay2, on fights such as Zhaj'hassa the Forgotten and Rakkhat. Green tree :Arcanist 75Tenacity 75Warlord 31Shadow Ward 34Tumbling 23Sprinter 2Red tree :Ironclad 61Thick Skinned 48Elemental Defender 49Hardy 49Spell Shield 22Quick Recovery 11Blue tree :Thaumaturge 75 (Even with the off balance nerf, after testing, it still seems that 75 thaumaturge is worth it if you can set off balance the boss, cause we have a lot of DoTs anyway) Elemental expert 49Elfborn 44Spell erosion 35Master-at-arms 37

7. Passives

For this build, the following passives are essential (of course, it's good to have all the passives from at least the three sorcerer skill lines ...) :

  • Daedric Summoning : Rebate II, Daedric Protection II, Expert Summoner II.
  • Dark Magic : Unholy knowledge II, Blood Magic II, Exploitation II.
  • Storm Calling : Capacitor II, Energized II, Implosion II, Expert Mage II.
  • Destruction Staff : Trifocus II, Penetrating Magic II, Elemental Force II, Ancient Knowledge II, Destruction Expert II.
  • Light Armor : Recovery III, Evocation II, Spell Warding II, Prodigy II, Concentration II.
  • Fighter's guild : Intimidating Presence, Banish the wicked III.
  • Mage's guild : Magicka Controller II, Might of the guild II.
  • Undaunted : Undaunted Command II, Undaunted Mettle II.
  • All your racial passives.
  • Alchemy : Medicinal Use III.

Vampire ?   Being a vampire stage two gives you 10% increase in magicka regen, which is always a nice bonus. I switched to vampire recently because the new skin from Scalecaller Peak enables to hide it pretty well.

8. Skills

First option : if you can play melee (and don't have guard)

Front bar (Asylum Perfected Fire Staff, infused with fire enchant):

  • Bound Aegis : Minor ward/resolve (which is given by combat prayer already, but always nice), and 8% max magicka, so a really great boost.
  • Force Pulse : Single Target ability with a little AoE. With your asylum staff, you'll be able to apply every second force pulse concussed (minor vulnerability), burning and chilled (minor maim) which will be both powerful and very helpful to your team.
  • Cristal Fragments : A really strong single target ability that you should use only when it's procced, of course. It's a really huge damage and will grant Minor Prophecy to you and your teammates.
  • Liquid lightning : One of our main source of damage, high damage AOE. Be careful that its radius isn't so big, so it must be positionned adequately. This needs to be frontbar (see rotation section).
  • Inner Light  : 5% max magicka (and an extra 2% with Magicka Controller II), and Major Prophecy (which isn't really needed if you use spell power potions).
  • ULTIMATE : Greater storm atronach. With Dragon Bones, the atronach has been buffed as it now scales with your max stats, and now provides awesome single target as well as a nice major berserk for the teammates who can use the synergy. You want to use this morph as the longer duration brings better single target damage. On burst situations, or on fights with a lot of adds, the destro ult is still preferable.

Back bar (Maelstrom inferno staff, infused with berserker enchant):

  • Bound Aegis : This is a toggle, so you must have it on both bar.
  • Empowered ward : What gives the magsorc a high survivability. Not only is it a strong ward, but it also gives 10% extra magicka recovery to you (which is not so useful) and to allies (which is cool for them), but for me the most important part for me is that it lasts 10s, which makes it possible, if the situation requires it, to cast it once per rotation and keep it up 100%.
  • Rearming trap : This skill, if positionned properly, will be able to give us 2x7s = 14s of Minor Force, which is an insane buff, especially when using Mechanical Acuity. If you can have someone (a healer or a tank) using guard on you, you don't need it and you can switch to the next section.
  • Elemental blockade : Strong AOE dot as well, must be up 100% to enjoy the insane crushing wall bonus from our Maelstrom as well. Fire blockade does 20% more dps to burning enemies, so it will be more potent than blockade of storms.
  • Mage' wrath/ Endless Fury : Our execute, which isn't as powerful as impale but still nice damage. Strictly speaking, Mage's Wrath is more damage. However, I run with endless fury cause it's better for solo PVE (and in particular in vMA) and I'm too lazy to remorph it.
  • ULTIMATE : Elemental rage. One of the most powerful ultimate in the game, insane damage and a very large AOE, which makes it imo the best choice for trash fights but also for boss fights with lots of adds. If you are sure that you will never use elemental rage, you can use the atro back bar and slot Shooting Star frontbar.

Second option : if you can't play melee (or you are guarded)

Front bar (Asylum Perfected Fire Staff, infused with fire enchant):

  • Bound Aegis.
  • Force Pulse.
  • Cristal Fragments.
  • Liquid lightning.
  • Inner Light.
  • ULTIMATE : Greater storm atronach.

Back bar (Maelstrom inferno staff, infused with berserker enchant):

  • Bound Aegis.
  • Empowered ward.
  • Haunting Curse : A nice damage skill with delay that will explode twice in 12s.
  • Elemental blockade.
  • Mage' wrath/ Endless Fury.
  • ULTIMATE : Elemental rage.

Third option : solo (vMA or 3dd vDSA)

Front bar (Asylum Perfected Fire Staff, infused with fire enchant):

  • Bound Aegis.
  • Force Pulse.
  • Cristal Fragments.
  • Liquid lightning.
  • Mage' wrath/ Endless Fury : If you play solo, endless fury is better for the nice magicka return, and easier to use on your frontbar.
  • ULTIMATE : Greater storm atronach.

Back bar (Maelstrom inferno staff, infused with berserker enchant):

  • Bound Aegis.
  • Empowered ward.
  • Rearming trap.
  • Elemental blockade.
  • Critical Surge (or Power Surge) : This will be your beloved self-heal, I use Critical Surge because the heal is stronger and I use spell power potions most of the time anyway. If you want to save some money on potions, use the other morph.
  • ULTIMATE : Elemental rage.

9. Stats

Here are my stats, unbuffed, on front bar. The screenshot isn't updated at the moment (wrong CPs and back bar staff).

10. Rotation

First option : if you can play melee (and don't have guard)

The rotation : (la is light attack, ha heavy) IMPORTANT Rearming trap gives you minor force during 14s, and your rotation should be around 8s (to make sure elemental blockade is up 100%). Therefore, you can recast trap every other rotation and still have 85%+ uptime on minor force. However, you need to make sure you always have minor force when acuity will proc, so you may recast trap twice in a row to ensure that. The rest of the time, you want to weave Force Pulse / Cristal Fragments as much as possible. I put some numbers underneath because that is typically the numbers I use on skeleton, but in trial it may not be so because of lag and mechanics. If you use your ultimate during your rotation, skip one FP/Cfrags weave. I recommand tracking Liquid Lightning and Blockade so you know when they need to be recasted. Keeping that in mind, my rotation is typically :

(Make sure your potion is up, cast Greater Storm Atronach) la > LIQUID LIGHTNING >(swap)> la > ELEMENTAL BLOCKADE > la > REARMING TRAP > (swap) > (la FORCE PULSE or CRISTAL FRAGMENTS when available)x5 Restart.

la > LIQUID LIGHTNING >(swap)> la > ELEMENTAL BLOCKADE (swap) > (la FORCE PULSE or CRISTAL FRAGMENTS when available)x6 Restart.

During execute :

la > LIQUID LIGHTNING >(swap)> la > ELEMENTAL BLOCKADE > la > REARMING TRAP if needed >(la > MAGE'S WRATH) x5 or 6 >(swap) >Restart.

Second option : if you can't play melee (or you are guarded)

The rotation : (la is light attack, ha heavy) IMPORTANT Given that curse lasts 12s and a rotation is 8s, I recast it every other rotation. While it makes me lose some uptime on curse, it avoids uneccessary swaping that could lessen your dps (see the comment underneath on why Liquid Lightning frontbar). See comments in first option for the rest.

(Make sure your potion is up, cast Greater Storm Atronach) la > LIQUID LIGHTNING >(swap)> la > ELEMENTAL BLOCKADE > la > HAUNTING CURSE> (swap) > (la FORCE PULSE or CRISTAL FRAGMENTS when available)x5 Restart.

la > LIQUID LIGHTNING >(swap)> la > ELEMENTAL BLOCKADE (swap) > (la FORCE PULSE or CRISTAL FRAGMENTS when available)x6 Restart.

 During execute :

 la > LIQUID LIGHTNING >(swap)> la > ELEMENTAL BLOCKADE > la > HAUNTING CURSE if needed >(la > MAGE'S WRATH) x5 or 6 >(swap)> Restart.

  A few remarks :

  • Why using Liquid Lightning Front Bar. The reasons for these are that first, and most important, if you bar swap a Force Pulse when you were supposed to apply the Asylum staff debuff, you will cancel the debuff. With Liquid Lightning front, you make sure this never happens. The other reasons, are the same as in my pet build, and are why I have always used using Liquid Lightning front bar : its animation is a bit long, and with this rotation you can just swap cancel it easily. Third, with this rotation, we spend the major part of the fight (that is, apart from the execute) on our frontbar on which we have more magicka (with inner light), and the fire enchantment.
  • When you swap to back bar, make sure to never miss the light attack before casting elemental blockade, as otherwise you won't proc berserker.
  • If you have a problem sustaining, make sure you reapply your dots and sacrifice some Force Pulse/ Cristal Fragments weaving for one or two heavy attacks. If you can, track Off Balance and Off Balance Immunity (with Srendarr, for example), so you can heavy attack when Off Balance is up.

11. Parses

On all the parses below, CPs are the same as above, that is, my trial CPs, no extra point in penetration, no lover. The parses on skeleton are averaged parses, the uptimes are not extra lucky. 3m dummy parse, getting drained by someone else. I'm using lightning blockade back bar for off-balance, but as said before, in trial I prefer fire blockade. Using trap for minor force.  Lightning atronach parse, using trap. CPs were a bit different as this boss cannot be set off-balanced (40 pts in thaumaturge, the rest distributed among elfborn, elemental defender and master at arms)  I will eventually add more parses.

"this build is specifically made for group content - trial or dungeons -, but it can be adapted for solo content as well like vMA"

Having just returned after a 3 + yrs absence MagSorc is a tad new to me (sooo many changes!!) .....how would you go about changing it for solo/open world type stuff? Loving the build/class though and thanks heaps for your guide, very handy!!  ;)

Also, what do you recommend for gear for levelling/new/old....lol, age wise (I kid) but yea, I wont be seeing any fancy monster sets or super duper staves any time soon so what crafted sets would be good enough until I can score the good stuffs? I do have Julianos? (2)and Mad Tinkerer (5) available...that any good? Cheers!

(and yet another question...Why fire staffs? Is not lighting the go-to for Sorcs or is it because burning is a "better" aoe? We wont benefit from the new traits on burning or poison damage like DKs come SS so was just curious as to the choice. Thanks again!! )

This is a great build - but something I've noticed when solo/parsing, sustain is a BIG issue for me. Pretty much at the 30% mark of a 3mil dummy I start to run out, and yes I could use heavy attacks, but that's a big dps drop.

Currently I use witchmothers + external ele drain.

Any tips on how I can improve this? I use normal asylum inferno and Build 1.

I believe this build is meant to use synergies. I've never used a dummy but try having the person applying drain also toss you orbs and such?

Characters: Valrien Dravic (Dunmer Magicka Sorcerer)

Scores: vMA (499,956) (Probably Null Now)

Yep maybe. I actually ended up going 1x mag regen on a ring since I needed to sustain a 6mil dummy.

@Jadax Indeed, solo the sustain is really hard. With the Summerset update, I've modified the build a bit (you can check it here) and our sustain is better as we are no longer using force pulse. I didn't have the time yet to update it on Tamriel Foundry but I will try to do it soon. Going with one regen glyph is a good solution, indeed :). In trial, try to use as many synergies as possible.

@kinettic29 Check the link I included for the updated version of this build !
