Now before I start, I would like to say I have been hyped for this game for over a year and a half- watching shoddycast lore, The ESO vodcast, here on TF, watching twitch streams, playing the ESO beta, etc. I have played MMO's since runescpae and WoW and elder scrolls games since daggerfall, so I know this genre of game. Now that ESO is out I absolutely love it, but that's not the case for others.. As the title suggests is ESO dying?

With all of the bad reviews and hate ESO got, not to mention the console delay, new MMOs coming out soon (Wildstar), and numerous bugs, how long do you think ESO will last? What I mean by that is how long do you think the game will last until it goes F2P or people stop playing it?

Forevaaaaaah!!!

not long, according to my contact and guild lists atleast. hardly anyone logging in, i have also dratically reduced my playtime. it's a solid game, but that's simply not enough...

I had previously thought that the console release would be a way for ESO to regain some momentum. However now that it has been pushed back so far I think it will be ftp at console launch. At this point I think they just want to recover their initial investment and see if they can stabilize the ship

No, but i'm tired of such worrying topics and f2p discussions. Why don't you just enjoy the game mate?... while it lasts.

I personally don't own the game. That's why I'm asking; to see if it's worth getting. I was going to buy the console version, but now that it's delayed I don't know.

If you can get the game on sale it might be worth taking a flyer on. It comes with 30 days free sub and if you dont like it you dont have to resub. Later on the game will go ftp and you can come back if it is to your liking.
I wouldnt be surprised if the FTP or BTP model wasnt announced with the console release. Right now that is making more and more sense to me.

Not long.
By itself it was already flagging, and Wildstar just expertly kneecapped it with its open beta JUST as the renewal came up.
I, for example, shut down my ESO subscription. Was planning to keep it, but since I realized I will spend the next week doing Wildstar open beta, there's really no sense paying for ESO for a week if I'm not playing. A week from now, we'll see. If Wildstar impesses me, no sense renewing ESO for 2 weeks before Wildstar release. And then Wildstar itself, however long it lasts...I could be gone 2-3 months (including this month). And by when, what state will ESO be in, who knows?
Say what you will about Wildstar, the game, but its developers are cunning bastards.
Also, just from my own personal observations, the population seemed to be steadily declining, it's been harder and harder to find groups, etc. Though that's possibly because I fell behind the main horde of levelers a little bit with all the alts I have.
I'm hoping the game is still around and healthy when I come back. But considering how many quit, myself included, they will need to work real hard to keep afloat, I think. And if they decide to go F2P, that's like admitting you've failed. Also huge turnoff to people like me, who prefer to play a sub for the game we enjoy, rather than be nickel-and-dimed constantly for trivial stuff, in F2P game.

All you get are people's opinions of the game, translated as "a long time" if they liked it, or "not long" if they don't. There is no relevant data available to any of us.

Here's what I want to say, based on playing in the closed beta: It's WoW with lasers and dodge-rolls. That's it. If that's what you want, that's your game. The cleverness of their marketing department will get people to try it, but it won't get people to stay. They'll stay if they wanted WoW with lasers (and dodge rolls).
Given that both are themepark MMO's, I can't imagine two games more different in tone, playstyle and overall look-and-feel than TESO and WS. It's like comparing Glen Cooke's "The Black Company" series vs Dragon Ball Z. I suspect most people are *heavily* predisposed toward one based on their tastes far more than the games themselves.

Well just as people already said, given the push they gave to consoles, which would have been a strong support I can't see it lasting long at all anymore. F2P doesn't seem like it would make sense if it is still coming to console, but who knows really, B2P seems to be the logical move. However, if the console is scrapped then F2P is the only move they have left. Trust me I was depressed hearing the delay, i was looking forward to playing it on the console, but I won't even purchase it now unless it is amazing and still growing in 6 months, which I highly doubt.
I was so pumped for this game too, even with all the flaws it was dealing with. I felt if the console hadn't been delayed the flaws could have been over looked an hammered out and the game could have been seen as a success still. But with the delay, if the game is still p2p, then all the console version will do is buy it a little more time for them to milk more money out of the customer base. Which is all ZOS seems to be interested in doing. I mean the Imperials behind the money grab, the delay which led to them asking people to buy the pc version and transfer to console for 20 more dollars. Funniest part of that is those with the IE edition lose out if they cancel, they can't get the IE on the pc, and then would have to pay more money to go to the original platform they wanted to begin with. ZOS isn't a company I see giving any money to, they lost their chance, not so much with the delay but with their clearly shady methods of dealing with their customers.

As long as the game can continue to pump out content it can survive forever. EQ1 still lives, DAoC still lives. WoW will probably be there until the day a comet takes out the planet even though I cant' stand that game.

^This. We don't know how much money ZOS has to get back in. Maybe they are happy with keeping a small number of subsricptions, maybe not. Maybe they believe thy can gain more by going F2P while keeping their standards or maybe they'll succumb to a less desirable form of P2W.
Unless we get a statement from ZOS or at least some data on sales and subscriptions this discussion is futile. Going F2P with the console launch seems like a possibility, but I don't want to ruin my fun now with something that may never happen.

Lord almighty, guys seriously move past your extreme love. EQ, FFXI, WOW came during times where the genre was growing and the competition was slim to none. They are coming now into a bloated genre that is honestly doing poor. How many success stories do we hear now a days with a game like this,...FFXIV and that was after a complete over haul and a company that actually stayed in contact with the consumers on a more transparent level.

No I haven't had the luxury of playing the game yet but given what I have heard and seen, and I am sure many could verify that have, it hasn't been a positive beginning. So you can pretend that the game is thriving, but given that I have been reading more and more about guilds becoming ghost towns and many not renewing waiting for the next thing yadda yadda yadda, what I am saying is not far fetched. So shush. I wasn't bashing i was bummed that what I had wanted to support will not be out for another 6 months, and honestly we are unsure if it even will come out. We have the word of a company that has been doing some pretty funky shit in terms of how it handles its customer base. But hey if it does make it and does well I will be the happiest person out there. Hopefully they will have solved the majority of their problems when it does come out. I mean I hear people have such issues just trying to support the game and having double charges and no game time added, being banned accidently, having the subscription given only to lose it in a few days.
Maybe had they delayed the game a month or two and given some more betas and a couple open betas it would have really helped the game but they didn't. Looks like they are paying a heavy price.

Hard to say. Some of the longer term reviews of Wildstar strongly suggest its pretty bland in almost all ways until you get to around level 20, at which point it becomes quite hard, basically like an MMO inspired by bullet hell games ("you get hit you die" seems to be a common comment).
The combat looks interesting post 20. It's responsive combat consisting of skill shots combined with a high requirement on movement.
As for beta, I think the beta caps a 15, so for beta you get 15 levels of a bland cartoony sci fi themed MMO with an unknown IP. TSW had very large beta numbers, then no one bought the game because the beta experience was so marginal. As for first month success, really difficult gameplay has typically not been a strong selling point. This is likely going to be exacerbated by the high requirements the game apparently places on connectivity (250ms of lag supposedly makes the challenging content unplayable).

Game won't see any change in business model for another 12+ months MINIMUM, not until the console release has shown ZOS how it will perform and then they'll make a decision... so you don't have to worry about it going F2P any time soon.
Additionally, if their updates are not generating acquisition or reactivating lapsed players, then they likely just reduce the frequency and size of their updates and reserve the content they would otherwise include, for bigger and more spread out expansions instead of going F2P, since there's be no ROI otherwise, and they'd have no money to drive further development. I think ZOS will put this game in "run mode" (no updates) and let it die before turning over to the F2P model... in my opinion at least.
Either way, No matter how bad it might look at the moment, the game isn't going anywhere or changing massively (Like changing business model) for a good year or so yet... AT LEAST!

mhm i already unsubbed just like most of players from one of my guilds that was inviting only vr10 players, 3 weeks ago there were like 100-150 players online during peak times. Now guild has barely 20 active players, well good for us Wildstar is releasing soon

Could you perhaps offer some additional opinions, focused on books you have not read, movies you have not seen and restaurants you couldn't find with a map and a flashlight? Because if there's one thing *I* value, it's the judgments of people like yourself, unburdened by direct knowledge, free of relevant experience and unafraid of sounding foolish.
