Shield Tank Sorcerer – Magically Immortal

Note: This isn’t the best build of this theory type, although it works really well….. a DK doing a similar setup, shield stacking off of max HP is better, but I had this character available already at champion level so I thought I would make him into a tank, since I won’t be using it for DPS.

    The Good:

      Can do decent DPS

    • Can take lots of punishment
    • Something a little different to play with
    • Almost indefinite sustain

    The Bad:

    • Your shield HAVE to be up,.. or else you die.
    • Quite a busy rotation, need to keep track of lots of dots & shields

    Objective:

To create a magicka Sorcerer Tank that can do decent damage, cc mobs, and take some serious punishment.

    Theory:

The Idea here is to stack max magicka as much as possible and max out Bastion in our cp tree so that we can maximize Hardened Ward and Dampen Magic shields. Using the Infernal Guardian Set to help with DPS, as well as running 2 powerful dots.

    Mundus Stone:

    Atronach

    Food:

    Blue Health & Magicka

    Potions:

Magicka Regen Potion which is less costly to brew, but still lasts the full 45sec. If really out of gold, the cheapy magicka ones will work ok as sustain isn’t too much of an issue with this build.

    Armor & Jewelry:

1 Heavy, 1 Medium, 5 Light (with Undaunted Passive, otherwise all light armor until you get Undaunted passive)

There is a bit of flexibility here, as many different sets have max magicka as bonuses, but with the two piece Infernal Guardian helm, everything else should be max magicka enchant, max magicka set bonus and all infused. If you can’t find the exact pieces i’m running, mix and match till everything is max magicka set bonus.

Jewelry enchants should be all magicka cost reduction.

This is the armor & jewelry setup i’m running. All Magicka Enchant & all Infused.

      2pc Infernal Guardian Monster Set

    • 3pc Spell Power Cure – Infused (or anything with 2 max magicka bonus)
    • 3pc Shadow Dancer (or anything with 2 max magicka bonus)
    • 2pc willpower (1 ring 1infused shield)
    • 2pc Destruction Mastery (or anything with max magicka bonus)

Your shield should look like this:

    Skills:

    Sword and Board Bar

    1: Pierce Armor

    2: Bound Aegis

    3: Restraining Prison

    4: Dampen Magick

    5: Hardened Ward

    u: Shooting Star

    Destruction Fire Staff Bar

    1: Bound Aegis

    2: Elemental Blockade

    3: Liquid Lightning

    4: Inner Fire

    5: Hardened Ward

    u: Shooting Star

    Self Buffed Stats:

Note: My regen isn’t very high, but my cost reduction is. In my experience Cost Reduction > Magicka Regen

    Rotation:

Use only Hardened Ward every 6 seconds unless you need the extra damage mitigation from Dampen Magic. If you need extra damage mitigation, every 4 seconds alternate between the two. During this rotation, you need to taunt the boss or as many mobs as possible while keeping liquid lightning and elemental blockade up. It is quite a time filled rotation and there won’t be a moment when “you have nothing to do”,.. you’ll always be doing something. DO NOT BLOCK unless it is to mitigate a heavy attack or something similar. With mobs, use Restaining prison to stop them in their tracks to make it easier for the DPS to melt right through them. When switching to your back bar, you basically have to reapply hardened ward to make it through the 2 dot rotation, then switch back to main bar and continue with shield stacking.

Unless zos fixes it, you may want to farm up a pirate set for damage reduction… reduces damage before shields AND procs through shields.

Is this the monster set that turns you into a skeleton, farmed at Blackheart Haven? (where that annoying final boss turns someone into a skeleton)

You might want to run 5 pieces of Necromancer with this build, Slot Inner Light, Bound Armanents and the Twilight healer pet on both bars. Run with the Magicka Mundus stone too. With a setup like that in purple gear and enchants, I can hit just short of 55K Magicka. The heals from the pet take me from zero health to nearly full in one pop.

You will also want to be a vampire for the additional regen. The Undeath passive also works on shields, so if you get low on health and pop a shield – you get a massive damage reduction.

    I bet you meant “Necropotence”.

From memory, I’m at 44xxx Max Magicka with 5 Necropotence, 5 Julianos, 1 monster shoulders, 49x CP, Divines rather than Infused, and Thief rather than Atronach mundus.

Yes, Necropotence thanks. 5 Necro Infused, 5 Elegance, Magicka Enchants and The Mage you can get a lot higher than 44K.

    @JKith,

Which feature or add-on gives the exact shield-strength number(s) that you showed? Thanks!

Heavy armor does nothing to strengthen our shields which scale off of max Magicka. The point of this build is to have high shields. BUT,.. with update 13 coming up and Frost Staff tanking will be a thing, this build will probably have to change quite a bit.

Heavy armor is great at increasing your mitigation/resistances, both by the raw stats it carries and in the benefits from some of its passive skills.

But mitigations/resistances are of limited importance in builds that rely on damage being absorbed by shield bubbles.
