    Flim flamed – the Whips ‘n’ chains rebirth

    Welcome to my build-thread for the Magicka DK in Homestead. This build is, for all intents and purposes, for PvE only and will aim to keep Magicka DKs at their current, highly esteemed level. The gap between magicka and stamina is fully closing this patch, where we can see that magicka builds will now often boast higher singletarget DPS aswell as far better cleave/AoE damage. With quite a few buffs to DKs in particular, we’re easily close to the top of the foodchain this patch.

    This build is largely based on @IWM’s Magicka DK build, but with my own opinions and testing for this new DLC. I’ll be trying to minimize the grind for gear, whilst putting in my opinions on several different setups, tell you why they may or may not work aswell as listing my preferred and basic setups.

    Character sheet

    These are my stats with only buff-food, Inner Light and Minor Slayer active. I’m using the same gear as stated in my BiS Powerhouse section.

    Gear

    The “I’m not CP160 yet!”- Setup

    Perfect for leveling. Magicka Furnace gives alot of magicka aswell as resistances and Torug’s gives Spell DMG and health so it’s the perfect combo. Skills are mostly the same, but if you’re solo leveling you might wanna consider some more self-heals such as inhale, rapid regen and/or healing ward.

    The Best-in-Slot Powerhouse

    Divines on all 7 pieces is extremely important. You also want 5 Light, 1 Medium, 1 Heavy for the Undaunted passives.

    Burning Spellweave got a significant buff in One Tamriel, and with this in mind, it will outparse TBS at 35% Major Force uptime or less. With the changes to how Major/Minor Force interact with TBS, it’s no longer an option for serious raid environments. The crit-meta is dying slowly and being beaten by a new Spell Damage meta, giving Burning Spellweave an easy upper-hand.

    Optional Gearsetups

    With this new patch and it’s focus on Spell Damage, Moondancer+BSW is a great combination if you have the mental capacity to proc it properly and keep it up. I’ve found the added difficulty in the rotation and the hunt for synergies is outweighed by the easier option to focus simple damage. With the nerf to magicka sustain, Moondancer 5pc becomes increasinlgy helpful regardless of which proc you get, but it increases the difficulty of our rotation to such an extent that I don’t see it as viable for end-game raiding situations where you need to adapt fast.

    Twice-Born star is only viable in a group where Aggressive War-Horn is at 60% uptime or higher. If you are in a good raidgroup, use TBS for any trial where you feel you need extra health. Julianos will still outperform TBS when there is a lack of WH. Additionally, TBS will benefit you alot especially while progressing in raiding. If you’re still learning mechanics, I would value TBS higher than any other 5pc gear. For example, I will run BSW for any vet trial except vMoL Hard Mode. Here, the health is just too valuable. In any other trial, you can easily go for BSW and still survive fine. Shields are still important though.

    Silks of the Sun is also a viable way to go. You can mix and match how you please with this set, but ultimately it will fall slightly behind Burning Spellweave and slightly ahead of TBS. For those of you who have bought it and don’t care about max DPS, feel free to run it.

    Skills

     

    These are my skills in most instances. I’ll go into more detail below.

    Main-bar

    1. Molten Whip – Your main spammable. It gains a huge increase in damage from your Standard aswell as your Ardent Flame passives, so it really hits like a truck.
    2. Engulfing Flames – A nice DoT which buffs all of our fire attacks. Since 99% of our damage is fire, I’d say it’s a good idea to slot EF.
    3. Burning Embers – Also a nice DoT, but this one adds alittle healing to the mix aswell – even moreso in Thieves Guild. The damage coupled with the healing makes it a perfect DoT in our arsenal
    4. Force Pulse – This is really a fillerslot, but I’ve decided to slot Force Pulse here given it’s use in most trials. For pretty much any encounter in a trial, there may arise situations where you need to go ranged for a few seconds in order to continue to provide high DPS. Add this with the need for a destro staff ability on each bar to maintain the new Destruction Staff 8% increased Single Target damage passive, Force Pulse becomes increasingly valuable.
    5. Inner Light – the unbeatable Max Magicka + Spell Crit slot. A must-have for all magicka builds! Our source for a constant Major Prophecy as well as +7% Max Magicka.
    6. ULTIMATE: Shooting Star – This ultimate is more for the passive 2% extra Max Magicka than anything, but it’s a very nice ultimate for trash-packs and such. We rarely use it, but the extra magicka it gives is very nice.

    Off-bar

    1. Eruption – An incredibly strong ground-DoT which lasts quite a while aswell. Place it where the boss will stay and watch it tick!
    2. Rearming Trap – Our source of Minor Force. You only need to pop it once every other rotation, but make sure to reapply it once your Minor Force runs out. It adds a crapton of DPS.
    3. Flames of Oblivion – With the changes in TG to this skill and it’s morphs, the choice of morph is obvious. We’re not healers, we’re DDs so we choose what’ll net us the most damage! I’ve had this bad-boy tick for 23k a pop so it’s definitely not worth trashing just yet.
    4. Elemental Blockade – With my testing, I couldn’t justify choosing Unstable Wall of Elements simply for it’s explosion. Therefore, I have chosen Elemental Blockade as my morph. It has a longer duration, so in my testing it ended up helping my rotation more than the extra explosion from UWoE. This skill is a must-have for anyone using Destro staff. Especially if you have the Maelstrom Destro!
    5. Inner Light – We need that Max Magicka and Spell Crit on both bars, so double-slot it!
    6. ULTIMATE: Standard of Might – Propably the best ultimate in the game DPS-wise. It not only does insane damage, but it also buffs our whips. Being our main spammable, this is too crazy to pass up on. Pop it and watch those numbers rise faster than a fat persons blood-pressure!

    Mundus Stone

    The choice here is relatively set in stone. We want to maintain a decent level of spell critical, so we’re going for the Thief stone. If you want the math behind it, check out @Asayre‘s fantastic work. If you’re using TBS, use Thief + Shadow.

    Rotation

    Many people fear Magicka DKs for their rotation and the complexity involved. I think my rotation is fairly simple once you get into it, but it relies on alot of weaves and muscle memory. Keep your tongue straight and it’ll work like a charm!

    First off, terminology. FHA = Full Heavy Attack, LA = Light Attack, MA = Medium Attack, BC = Block Cancel.

    Pre fight you need to activate FoO, your potion and Inner Light in order to empower your Full Heavy. FHA -> eruption -> LA -> FoO -> LA -> trap -> LA -> standard -> LA -> embers -> LA -> engulfing -> LA -> Blockade -> 6x whip+LA -> LA -> embers -> LA -> engulfing -> LA -> Blockade -> LA -> Eruption -> LA -> FoO -> LA -> Trap -> LA -> 3x Whip+LA -> Embers -> Engulfing -> Blockade -> 6x Whip+LA and rinse and repeat. Now, some aspects cannot be put into the rotation, such as reactivating Standard and Potions. Reactivate potions on cooldown and drop your standard either on cooldown or when it seems reasonable (Like when Mantikora spawns on Serpent or when Hulk spawns on Rakkhat). Additionally, we don’t do another FHA during the rotation as it’s only for the initial burst. That is also why we empower our FHA and pray to RNGesus for a crit (50k opener is nice if RNGesus blesses us).

    Champion Points

    These are extremely subject to change as my testing progresses. I’m basing my Mage CPs on @Asayre‘s incredibly helpful spreadsheet.

    In this patch, there is also a massive change to how concussion works and how it is procced. If you have a magsorc/healer in your group running Lightning Wall of Elements, use the second CP setup. If not, use the first CP setup.

    Changes for vmol

    Based on several vMoL completes, I can conclude with the following:

    DKs will now become more for utility whilst still dishing out high DPS. We’re needed for chaining more than ever, which is kind of nice. The ranged nature of many fights means we’ll be utilizing Force Pulse for all it’s worth and swap FoO, Inner Light on backbar for situational skills such as Deep Breath and Chains.

    As far as skills go, this is what I’ll be operating with for 90% of the Trial:

    As far as skills go, the above setup is what I run for 1st and last boss. If I’m on chain-duty for 2nd boss, I’ll swap FoO for chains and IL for Deep Breath. For first boss I run the same as my normal PvE setup. Most trials trashfights focus specific targets, so we have no real use for an AoE spammable, making Ele Ring sub-par. For first and last boss, you can swap IL on backbar for Harness if needed (It usually is).

    Frequently asked questions

    Q: What kind of potions and food do you use?
    A: Max Magicka + Max Health food. Unfortunately we’re chugging potions like we have a bad Skooma addiction. If you don’t have the gold to spend, atleast try to use 2stat pots with Spell DMG and Magicka. If you’re really that cheap, you can also keep Entropy on your bar…

    Q: When do we get more parses?
    A: I upload them as often as I get them. I’m picky about my parses – especially now that we’re running a very different setup from previous updates – so don’t expect new parses every week.

    I’ve always been willing to help with utility along with being main DD so my build is essentially the same except with valkyn instead of kena (more sustain and looks way better and I care about such things), ele drain and molten weapons, and right now flip-flopping btw ele ring and talons and draw essence. My biggest issue atm is figuring out which abilities go on which bars, so I’ll play around with your placement. Sure it’s a DPS loss to run so many extra utility abilitiesbut I’ve gotten used to having them in my rotation and it nearly guarantees I am self sustaining without needing pots, even if someone in group like healer goes down.

    I wanted Valkyn to be good again so badly because I LOVE the way it looks, but I’m more a min/maxer than an aesthetically fixated person, unfortunately.

    I was also wondering about Draw Essence for a while. If you absolutely need it, I’d say slot it on your back-bar and have Elemental Wall on your main bar. We want 100% uptime of that anyways, so it’s a good re-slot.

    I think Dual Wield would be good for Talons/Draw Essence. I don’t have Twinblade and Blunt passive yet, but it gives me around 500 SP more on the dw bar + Torugs.

    The problem with that is that either you’re sacrificing Weaving on your main bar (a bigger DPS loss) or you’re sacrificing most of your AoE skills on your off-bar, which is also a DPS loss. I just don’t find DW swords that good on a DK, but on a NB or Sorc I wouldn’t go without them!

    With 501 CPs, staying alive isn’t very hard – even at 16k HP. If you’re having trouble, swap one Arcane Willpower ring/neck for a healthy one :D

    Of course! I welcome all kinds of constructive feedback. I can make a separate section for a more “toned down” version of the build, but honestly if you swap Kena with Valkyn Skoria and use 1 Healthy ring of Willpower, you’re golden. Sustain will be improved by Skoria regardless, but you can swap Proxy on your main bar for Ele Drain if you’re still struggling and your healer/tank is reluctant to support.

    This build was aimed more at the raiding community, but I’m here to help anyone playing a magicka DK.

    Actually he wouldn’t need to change any skills since he can recast burning embers and get a 10k heal from it…every class has a ton of mitigation and self heals for the oh shit moments, btw loving the more realistic ESO model where each person has a lot more responsibility on them instead of the same old boring trinity.

    Very true! However, 16k HP doesn’t sit right with most people. I constantly get nagged at in PUGs because of my health. I get asked if I don’t have buff-food etc. If someone would feel more comfortable having more health, I would advise going for Valkyn and/or healthy rings/neck.     Very true! However, 16k HP doesn’t sit right with most people. I constantly get nagged at in PUGs because of my health. I get asked if I don’t have buff-food etc. If someone would feel more comfortable having more health, I would advise going for Valkyn and/or healthy rings/neck.     I saw @benawaw89 suggesting it in his Magicka DK Meta thread, but I don’t believe it’s more beneficial… With the way I have my bars set up, I weave alot on the off-bar aswell. Couple that with the fact that my testing didn’t convince me that DW + Talons is better than Ele Ring spam.

    In my testing I just didn’t find a DW off-bar to be beneficial for my playstyle and as such chose to leave it out. I’m not shunning off using it permanently, but as of now it’s not worth it in my mind.

    I agree with you, until i see parses showing that dw on back bar is better i am not going to believe it, maybe for the gauntlets but for any of the bosses i still think dual destro is better. I have better parses on my magicka nb on the first and second boss using dual destro than i do with dw backbar. Because having a dw backbar would assume that you just stand there casting aoes whenever adds come up but i think thats extremely ineffecient

    Couldn’t agree more. Atm I can’t see how a DW backbar would be beneficial at all in any circumstance really. You need that weaving power, imo. And Elemental Blockade + Ele Ring = OP
