Hybrid DK DPS for PvE (one Tamriel)

    Finally, it seems we can do hybrid DPS builds that do not completely suck. Based on the ideas of Alanarre‘s Shock Knight and Masel92‘s Elemental Fury – I have come up with the build below. It is immensely fun to play and adds big enough DPS to do most content in the game. I play on XBox, but hope to get a Bloodspawn or Slimeclaw parse in soon to get real DPS numbers. If anyone has a PC to test this with mods, I would love to know their numbers.

    Race / Mundus

    Dunmer or Altmer both work great.

    Run with the Thief Mundus to improve critical change.

    Gear

    We want to get 5 light armour for the penetration bonus while maximising our buffs to Heavy Attack damage. This is achieved by combining Sergeants Mail (from Wayrest) with Undaunted Unweaver (from Blackheart Haven). We also want to leave room for a monster set on our damage bar as it will be a DPS loss if we don’t. Because this build relies almost entirely on heavy attacks for damage – we do not care much about a large magicka pool. Instead, we optimise for survival and spread our investment into both Magicka, Health and Stamina.

    • Head: Light Grothdar/Ilambris/Valkyn Skoria – Divines, Prismatic Glyph
    • Shoulder: Light Grothdar/Ilambris/Valkyn Skoria – Divines, Prismatic Glyph
    • Chest: Sergeants Mail – Divines, Prismatic Glyph
    • Legs:  Sergeants Mail – Divines, Prismatic Glyph
    • Boots: Undaunted Unweaver – Divines, Prismatic Glyph
    • Belt: Undaunted Unweaver – Divines, Prismatic Glyph
    • Gloves: Undaunted Unweaver – Divines, Prismatic Glyph
    • Jewelry: Sergeant’s Mail (hint: the optional boss in Wayrest 2 drops a named necklace) – Spell Damage Enchant
    • Damage Bar: Sharpened Maelstrom Lightning Staff or Sergeants Lightning Staff with Damage Enchant. If you get sergeants staff – replace the legs of Sergeants Mail with Undaunted Unweaver and add a medium shoulder/head. You can use any other staff you find until you get BiS.
    • Buff bar: 1H/S both in Undaunted Unweaver. Prismatic Glyph on Shield. Shock Glyph on weapon. Weapon preferably charged, but any trait will do (I use training because that is what I could loot so far)

    Attributes

    All into Magicka

    Champion Points

    Blue tree:

    • 100 in Elemental Expert
    • 75 in Thaumaturge (for Exploiter Passive)
    • Rest in Staff Focus

    Red tree:

    • I run 100 points in Bastion and the rest 50/50 in Elemental Defender and Hardy. Up to your playstyle really, I like shields

    Green tree:

    • Doesn’t matter much really. You will never run out of resources with this build
    • I put 60 in Arcanist and 60 in Mooncalf to unlock Wind Running (tiny, tiny buff, but what else is there worth having in the green tree?)
    • Points in Tumbling are useful to avoid damage

    Bar Setup

    Damage Bar (Lightning Staff):

    • Burning Embers
    • Flame Lash – Cast if you need a heal and the target is off balance, hits pretty hard even with our low magicka pool
    • Inner Light
    • Elemental Blockade – keeps targets off-balance
    • Dampen Magic – The oh-shit button
    • Shooting Star – pop whenever ready

    Buff Bar (1H/S)

    • Molten Armanents
    • Evil Hunter – for the passive damage buff from Fighter’s Guild
    • 2 Flex spots. Example things to slot:
      • Extended Chains – to help out the tank if we need to
      • More fighter’s guild skills for more % increase to heroic slash (though it remains a weak skill we only use for the ultigen)
      • Orbs – to help out magicka DPS
      • Retreating maneuvers – for speed runs
    • Heroic Slash – because ultimate is great. If you are soloing, replace with Pierce Armour
    • Rearming Trap
    • Flawless Dawnbreaker – we never cast this, but buffs damage a little, you can run Standard of Might too

    Potions / Food

    Tri stat food plus any trash potions you can pick up. I use Stamina pots to keep my pool topped up for roll dodges.

    Rotation

    Our main source of damage is heavy attacks and proc’ing the monster set. We only need to get to the buff bar to cast a stamina based skill and set off the undaunted unweaver buff every 10 seconds. Rotation goes like this:

    Start fight with Molten Armanents + Rearming Trap

    • Elemental Blockade -> 3 Heavy Attacks -> Burning Embers with Bar Swap Cancel -> Heroic Slash with Bar swap cancel -> repeat

    Repeat above 4 times then rebuff Trap and Armanents and start over. Pop Shooting Star whenever it is ready.

    DPS

    Still very experimental. Without a maelstrom staff (rng gods have not been kind to me), purple gear (yes, I have not even golded the staff yet) and only self buffs – I am seeing my lightning attacks tick for 13-15K. Once I get everything golded out and get that damn staff, I am going to take this for a spin in the Bloodspawn test and get DPS numbers.

    I would appreciate if anyone who has this gear can get me a DPS parse.

    Stats

    My current stats with Molten Armanents buffed, two tri stat glyphs (rest in Magicka):

    • 31K Magicka
    • 22K Health
    • 19K Stamina
    • Spell Damage: 2K
    • Weapon Damage: 1.3K
    • Spell Resist: 16K
    • Phys Resist 10K

    Seeing some parses would be interesting to assess whether it’s really a viable hybrid build. It’s weird, but I like it! One thing : wouldn’t dual wield lead to more daage than 1H/S?

    I think he is skirting the line of hybrid and utilizing 1hs for the utility with trap and heroic but is likely not spending much time on that bar.  Force and heroism are adding value to his staff bar more than being a true dps bar.  To go dw would be worse imo.  I think he could probably lose hunter and replace with scalding rune or scorching talons for another magicka DOT to add more dps on the 1hs bar.  And i would slot standard on 1hs bar as indicated for the passives to continue to benefit the magicka dps not invest in the stam dps skills any further.

    I would put a debuff poison or a fire enchant on the 1h to proc them with heroic and light attack weaves between skills and keep it sharpened for the continued DOT ticks on barswap.

    Dual wield or 1H/S doesn’t matter much – there is no significant damage on the back bar anyway. I suppose that Dual wield with two swords would add a little damage to the Heroic Slash.

    The problem with putting a DOT on the off bar is that you lose 1-2 seconds of heavy attack damage by casting another ability on that bar. The only time i want to spend on the back bar is the time needed to reapply the Undaunted buff – and that requires a stamina based ability. I am still experimenting with which ability to use. Some thoughts from playing the build today:

    • Heroic Slash – The ultigen is nicy, but I requires you to be in close range
    • Noxious Breath – Pretty weak DOT, only about 700 DPS
    • Vigor – Nice for PUG, backup healing. But DPS loss
    • Silver Bolts – still working on levelling up.  Might have some promise
