Shadows of the Hist is TESO’s Next DLC

Shadows of the Hist LandscapeOnly a week after the Dark Brotherhood made its way to The Elder Scrolls Online‘s console servers, the folks at ZeniMax Online Studios are looking towards the future with our first preview of the game’s next DLC: Shadows of the Hist.

If you’re one of the players who have bemoaned the single player focus of recent DLCs, this is going to be one to pay attention to, as in addition to some enticing base game updates, we’re going to be getting the two dungeons from our Vvardenfell datamining article and some updates to older trials.

As with our previous updates, The Elder Scrolls Online’s Update 11 will come in two parts: the DLC dungeon pack, and the base game patch. The DLC dungeon pack Shadows of the Hist features two, all-new Argonian-themed group dungeons to challenge you and your groupmates, and the base game patch will allow you to change your appearance or race, and introduces a wide selection of new hair styles and adornments!

Two Dungeon DLC Pack

Included in the DLC are the two new Argonian dungeons, Cradle of Shadows, a Dark Brotherhood battle against a group of rogue assassins, and Ruins of Mazzatun, a mysterious “Puzzle City” belonging the Argonian Xit-Xaht tribe. Both dungeons will feature normal and veteran modes and add their own new monster sets to the game.

Base Game Updates

Beyond the DLC, the DLC will also introduce several hotly anticipated features into the base game’s capabilities.

  • Trial Updates for Hel Ra Citadel, Aetherian Archive, and Dragonstar Arena
  • Cyrodiil Town Captures
  • Appearance, Race, and Name Change
  • Premium Hairstyles and Adornments
  • Text Chat for Consoles

We’ll be discussing some of Update 11’s additional features at a later date, including new motifs, new item sets, improved facial effects, the ability to dye costumes, and as always, many changes and improvements to existing content. Watch for additional information on our website and social channels, and get ready to join us on the test server (PTS) soon!

It looks like Shadows of the Hist is going to have a little for everyone, so be sure to stay tuned as more information becomes available.

Exciting news, except the crucial question is where are these dungeons located? The description mentions Black Marsh, which is not currently opened up in ESO, unless you consider Shadowfen a part of Black Marsh?? Might the dungeons be placed in Shadowfen, like MoL was put in Reaper’s March? It seems disconcerting that there is no mention of a larger zone where the quests leading up to the dungeon might be placed.

My best guess? This is an add-on to Dark Brotherhood in which you pick up quest in Anvil, and then port to dungeons in Shadowfen.

My guess is they will be instanced and probably through either a transport in each major city or in Shadowfen for the time being. The other possibility as you mentioned @chasilionis is that it will be out of Anvil.

We all knew this wouldn’t be a “zone” update. These are instanced dungeons that we’ll see on the larger Tamriel map but unlikely to be attached to a zone til the day Murkmire finally comes out (if that ever happens).

@chasilionis There’s no way it’s in Anvil, as that wouldn’t work for anyone who didn’t own the Dark Brotherhood DLC.

@Dominoid73 noted that the Ruins of Mazzatun are located in Shadowfen in our datamining article that uncovered these dungeons, so it’s likely that both are located in Shadowfen.

There really isn’t any reason that the quest couldn’t be picked up through the new DLC portion of the Collections menu with players just teleporting directly into the dungeon from a Wayshrine. Let’s face it, there isn’t really any need for these dungeons to be tied to a particular zone beyond it simply having been the convention so far.

I can’t think of the last time I went to a zone to go to a dungeon as it is, so you’re right, there isn’t much of a need.

True enough, but in the News items it states the following: “Join the Argonians of the Dark Brotherhood in their battle against a cadre of rogue assassins threatening to hurl all of Black Marsh into bloody chaos.” So where exactly would you come across these Argonians to pick up the dungeon quests? It seems to me that the Outlaw Refuges are starting to get crowded with quest givers!

I would have thought that the news of race changes being available would have been the biggest topic of discussion here.  From looking at the main site it appears that a lot of the customization options are going to be purchased with credits.

“Are you tired of your current look? Do you feel disconnected with your racial features or your gender? Do you wish your parents had chosen a better name? With Update 11 you can purchase tokens that will allow you to completely redefine your appearance, pick a different name, or choose an entirely different race!”

I am wondering if these tokens are going to be bought from the crown store, or if they are earned in game.

No new zone just 2 new group dungeons not much of a DLC. I guess this is a example of a “episode” DLC that Matt Firor was talking about. Here’s the Matt Firor quote from E3 2016: Firor says that Zenimax is aiming to release multiple, “smaller” DLC packs to cater to players who return to the game intermittently, creating something akin to ‘episodes’ for the game.

“It’s interesting to see what happens when you take away the subscription model away,” Firor explained. “You don’t see a hardcore playstyle – like playing for six months and then quitting – we don’t see that. We have a lot of players who will play for two or three weeks because they want to get through a zone and then stop. Then they come back two months later for another month, because there’s no pressure to play all of it at once.

“Our DLC packs cater to that, because they’re smaller, bite-size chunks of story and associated quests.

That doesn’t sound good for any future large Orsinium type DLCs.

I am honestly looking forward to the updated trials and DSA (both content and gear) more than the new dungeons. While new dungeons are very exciting, ZoS has been sitting on a pile of great content for awhile now in craglorn. I am glad to see parts of it get brought up to date!

Literally anywhere. My money is on in the dungeon after you’ve already gotten there.

This complaint would make a bit more sense if Vvardenfell didn’t look so huge.

    Same.

I am looking forward to trial groups generally consisting of only altmer and redguard running vAA and vHRC.

Data Mining is just another form of speculation, there’s has been lots of stuff that has been datamined or even announced that has never made it into the game. I haven’t heard anyone was Zenimax mention anything about Vvardenfell, have you? I hope they continue to give us large DLCs but I’m going by what Matt Firor, president of ESO is saying NOW about what they want to do with future DLCs.

I’m sitting here still wishing that the Spell-Making they discussed last year still makes it into the game at some point. While the additional dungeons are nice and the prospect of trials is enticing, I have to say that this DLC should be no more than 1000 Crowns as it appears to be the smallest DLC to date. Not to mention things like appearance, name, and race changes will probably all be around 1000 crowns as well. This “DLC” is more akin to a large update. Nothing game-changing just player appeasement.

After Orsinium (a good DLC IMHO) I took time off recently returning for Dark Brotherhood. Its okay as a single player experience goes I am not enjoying it as much as Orsinium story line but the CP and VR changes are certainly welcome. I don’t do a lot of dungeon or trials in this game, I raided out on LOTRO years ago and just tired of it. That said what I have done in ESO has been spectacular in terms of challenge I think they have done a good job here.

I am mostly an end game PvP player and today we are getting the localization for Japan which those players will now be on NA servers. I am concerned with the lag, its been a problem for so long now it’s a reason I canceled my sub and often just shut the game off. I went out over the weekend same result really just to many players in one space. I am encouraged by the barber shop/race changes that’s a big add for me I have toons ive had since launch that Id like to respect for better racial bonus’s will absolutely be checking that out.

Lastly I am hopeful upgrades to IC = spreading players out in Cyrodiil = less lag. There is so much potential there, the capture mechanics and rewards would absolutely help alleviate the lag issue. I am hopeful ZOS does this. Overall it looks like more solid content, while there will always be gripes its nice that this game still is putting out new things, upgrades, raids, zones. So many MMO’s do less.

I expect this to be about 1500-2k crowns with special edition being 3k-4k.

While I’ve heard a lot of complaints about the lack of a zone, no one who’s been paying attention thought we were getting a new zone in Q3. I do believe the datamining with Vvardenfell, maybe not all at once, but I’m willing to be that if it’s not all at once it’s two “episodes” that we see close together.

I know some hate’s been tossed out with cries of “just like DCUO” but I LOVED DCUO so I can’t say I’m bugged, I continue to sub and won’t have to worry about any of the things that are being sold for crowns. In DCUO I didn’t use my cash for anything but the occasional vanity items either. The addition of Hel Ra, AA, and DSA is an answer to a demand that’s been brought up on Live, at Pax, at E3, and all over the official forums, to say nothing of the /feedback I know I and many of my guildmates have left. If that’s the only thing they did this update beyond the barbershop garbage that would be enough for me, those are huge deals to guys like me who run nothing but endgame PvE content all day erryday.

After the update, killing an Argonian anywhere in the game should add 10k to your bounty for killing an endangered race.

Pure speculation but I’m curious if they’ve crafted all of this from the carcass of Murkmire.

At the BE3 after party, Kai said Murkmire is being redesigned away from an adventure zone (because of the Craglorn ghost town situation) but it’s still in the pipeline. My speculation is it’s backburnered for a while as we’ll most likely see Clockwork City, Mephala’s Realm and Vvardenfell before Murkmire.

It was to good to hear all about the dungeons and what they might entail, being located in Shadowfen is cool. I’m really excited about the BoP trading.
