E3 Announcement: ESO for Consoles in 2014

Breaking news from GameTrailer’s “E3 All Access Live” just announced that The Elder Scrolls Online will launch for PS4 in Spring 2014. A short game trailer was shown to accompany the announcement, but details are scarce for now.

The official Bethesda website has posted an “news alert” stating the game will also be launching for Xbox One. Bethblog posted a press release that seems to confirm the Spring 2014 release date for ALL platforms.

Latest Game in Award-Winning Franchise Arriving on PlayStation®4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac in Spring 2014

The main Elder Scrolls Online website has been re-launched with a new aesthetic design. The relaunch is accompanied by a short article confirming the console editions and the delayed release.

We’re very excited to announce that ESO is coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in addition to the PC and Mac. You’ll be able to play the game on any of these platforms in Spring 2014—we can’t wait to see you in-game!

Matt Grandstaff over at the Bethesda forums confirmed that ESO servers will be localized by platform in this post:

The megaserver technology featured in The Elder Scrolls Online will allow PC (Windows OS) players and Mac players to play together. XBox One players will play on their own megaserver as will PlayStation 4 players.

Further confirmation via the TESO Twitter:

These announcements obviously raise a lot of huge questions, will the megaservers be shared cross-platform? What does the console release mean for ZeniMax’ business model? Will ESO development be prioritized as “PC first”, or will content releases be gated by the need to reach console gamers? How much of the release date pushback to Spring 2014 is attributed to adapting the game for consoles?

More info as it comes…

    Terrible idea.

A mmo, especially one that shows such promise as the Elder Scrolls: Online should not be on the consoles.

Yes, the past 3 titles for the Elder Scrolls have been on consoles, but a mmo brings much more to the table than a single player RPG.

Every game has one thing that it shouldn’t, this is it for ES. Terrible idea, I’m still getting it for PC, and I have Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim for Xbox.

It should also come out on Xbox One since skyrim, oblivion, and morrowind were all xbox games.  I guess they will be making separate megaservers for the console version.  Anyway, interesting news.

It will be on Xbox One as well, Sony just has the Beta exclusive.

Still think this is a terrible idea. Development for ESO shouldn’t be divided between Playstation, Xbox and PC. All focus should have stayed with PC.

This is a very possible “death kiss” for the game, something I had not wanted to say. Highly disappointed, and I love console games.

Not necessarily. FF11 had merged servers for PC, 360, and PS2. FF14 will have merged servers for PC and PS3.

I wouldn’t say this is bad news, but it definitely is surprising.

    I agree whole heartily.

I think it is a good idea.  The more systems that have the game, the more players it will have.  This will in theory lengthen the life of the game.  I don’t see the problem if we all play it on the PC but someone else plays it on a console.

You’ve got an excellent point, even though Dc universe was on ps3 and had a subscription.

The problem is this. You have a stressed work load providing support to THREE systems now. Beta for THREE systems, bug fixes, content releases and so on.

Ever see DCUO? PC AND Comp. It flopped, hard. The controls were messed up and ability to react efficiently was very different. You could visually tell who was on PC and who was on console.

I don’t care what it comes out on I am still gonna get the game and play it until my eyes dry up and fall out. If it looks like it’ll play better on the Xbox One than my PC I’ll get it for the Xbox.

More than likely, the game will release on PC first and on consoles later on.

IF this is the case I doubt they will combine PC, Xbox and PS players.

I am shocked they did this. I will say this for Zenimax though, they do have the growth and people to be able to pull this move off of theirs. It is real ballsy to do this and I honestly think that the game will most likely end up being only the pc in the end. I love console games myself, but you move onto other games faster on the console. This is an MMO though, so who knows what it will do. I do see an issue with the ability bars though for the consoles like someone mentioned before. Sorry for not mentioning your name.

Now going by The Gray Watcher, TGW, Gray, The Gray Tank, and The Gray Warden. Pick a name or invent a new one people!
