The Rubicon #4 – Zero Hour

Byronyk and Fizzle are back in The Rubicon episode #4. This past week may not have had a lot of information, but we take quality over quantity.     This is Alexander, the person who asked about Healing to benefit my Tanking. You guys are awesome! I love that I actually got to email back and forth with you guys, rather than just submit something! So responsive!

    It’ll be much harder to have that level of contact with you guys when you guys are HUGE! :D

    No problem buddy! We don’t always get to answer all the emails in the show, but I will always try and respond personally to the questions. One day, we might have a show dedicated to just fan emails :)

    While I loved this podcast, and won’t try to ask for a do-over, I think you misunderstood my question just a LITTLE bit.

     

    See, I am under the impression there are no taunts, and that ‘high aggro abilities’ are more of something you choose as you level up your skills (I believe they said skills leveled up and had their own perks)… My assumption was something like this:

     

    Sun Strike: at skill level 5, choose between +threat, or +damage… etc..

     

    Mainly I was asking for stuff like the HoT Sun Strike, and yes, hopefully bubbles or a passive healing thing…

     

    I was mostly asking if THIS would be viable (I will be making up abilities as  I go)

     

    1: AoE attack with sword

    2: Extra strong shield bash with a special effect

    3: Sun Strike (an attack that puts an HoT on yourself)

    4: Defensive Bubble

    5: Big single target attack (if it draws a lot of aggro), a defensive situational, or an AoE heal (Rushed Ceremony)

    6: big healing or defensive ultimate

     

    VS

    1: same

    2: same

    3: big single target attack

    4: defensive situational

    5: big AoE attack, like maybe some sort of holy smite

    6: defensive ultimate

     

    I would of course never choose a cast-heal over a mitigation-boost… I have far too much experience in tanking to try to do that XD

    that said, I feel like 1-6 will be more situational, and that a lot of combat will be combinations with the mouse’s left and right click. I hope for that first layout to be viable because I hate it when I am helping Guildies with content and the healer is weak, and I have to rely entirely on them. Or even more common, no healer during PvP with me XD… If I am mostly being ignored (as a tank) the small amount of healing I would get over time with an HoT would help me not get wittled down from AoE and splash.

     

    If there are defensive boost abilities that mitigate more than a healing ability would heal (for equivalent resource consumption) I would choose that of course… but I really think Sun Strike (attack with self applied HoT) is something I am going to do my best to keep on my bar… I am hoping for a +threat component on that skills, or a +healing… I have a feeling Rushed Ceremony (AoE heal) would be much better replaced by a mitigation or high damage (for aggro or survivability) during raiding…

     

    I think I can say this though, in massive pvp my damage as a tank is fairly negligible. So maybe then I would go for a fairly good sized healing loadout while being as defensive as possible (I wouldnt heal like a pure healer, but I could be a hard to kill support.)

    I don’t think so, at least based on your follow up. Your original premise is based on non-existent threat mechanics. We know for a fact there will be a threat table and tank specs will have taunts/threat generating abilities, so that point is mute. We also never considered hard casted heals in our terminology because in most games, healing reduces your chance to block/dodge to 0.

    In your original email question, you said specifically:

    Do you think i could make a durable tank (max out my heavy armor, 1hander and shield, etc) that gives 1 or 2 of my quickbar spots to healing and still be viable? I primarily raid so id love to be able to help be more self sustaining to help my healers.

    You also referenced AoE heals such as rushed ceremony. To us, you are asking if swapping threat generating mechanics (through dmg or pure threat generation) is better than abilities that have less damage/ less threat but include heals. Again, I will say no. If your healers are unable to support you in a raid, it’s not a matter of you fixing your spec, it’s a matter of your healers learning how to heal better. Likewise, rushed ceremony is a pure healing ability.

    After saying all that, I would also say — sure, what you want is possible. However, from my perspective and Fizzle’s, we look at optimal setups for raid compositions and PvP. While a tank w/ healing abilities in PvP could be very useful, we don’t see it as something an ideal raid spec would be.
